UN Global Compact Network Thailand Co-hosts Key Event on Human Rights Due Diligence in Thailand

UN Global Compact Network Thailand (UNGCNT), in partnership with  the Thomson Reuters Foundation delivered the landmark event “Safeguarding Your Supply Chain: Navigating the Complexities of Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD)” in Bangkok, Thailand.

In recent years, businesses worldwide have faced increasing pressure to ensure the integrity of their supply chains, particularly concerning labour and human rights. The adoption of frameworks such as the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) and national regulations like the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act have underscored the importance of HRDD as a vital component of responsible business practices. For Thailand, the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights introduced in 2019 reflects the government's efforts to align with international standards, despite HRDD not yet being a legal requirement.

This event provided Thai businesses with insights and strategies to navigate the challenges of HRDD in line with international frameworks. The event opened with keynote addresses from Dr. Thanyaporn Krichtitayawuth, Executive Director of UN Global Compact Network Thailand, and Katie Fowler, Director of Responsible Business at the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Dr. Thanyaporn Krichtitayawuth said, “While HRDD is not yet legally required in Thailand, UNGCNT has been actively working with government agencies, civil society, international organizations, and academia to promote the voluntary adoption of HRDD practices across various industries. In addition, we are partnering with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Thailand and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to encourage transparency by supporting the public disclosure of HRDD findings from companies listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. “We aim to scale the impact of best practices from large corporations by strengthening HRDD capabilities among SMEs, the backbone of Thailand’s economy and key players in global supply chains. Strategic partnerships, including with the Rights and Liberties Protection Department and financial institutions, are vital, but more collaboration is needed to leave no business behind.”

Key highlights included a Panel Discussion: “Strategic Disclosure: A Roadmap for Thai Businesses”, where experts explored the intersection of HRDD and ESG reporting, cost implications of compliance, and practical tools for Thai businesses. The panel featured Dr.Kuanruthai Siripatthanakosol, Deputy Secretary-General of UNGCNT, who shared Five HRDD Solutions for Thailand

1. Making HRDD Fundamental: Ensure HRDD is a core aspect of business operations without creating unnecessary burdens for companies. Use an integrated approach in legislation that is simple and practical to implement, avoiding conflicts between large corporations and smaller businesses, especially in high-demand procurement scenarios.
2. Stakeholder Engagement: Go beyond external audits by actively listening to civil society and local communities. This ensures that all voices are considered and integrated into HRDD processes effectively.
3. Incentives: Introduce benefits such as tax reductions for sustainable business practices or low-interest loans. HRDD should be a clear requirement for accessing these incentives, encouraging businesses to adopt responsible practices. Additionally, government policies, such as the registration of migrant workers, must be designed carefully to avoid creating human rights risks for businesses and to ensure compliance is feasible and equitable.
4. Leveraging Technology for Transparency: Establish principles for transparency and accessibility in HRDD processes. Companies should disclose relevant information, allowing public scrutiny and fostering accountability while ensuring proper monitoring and tracking mechanisms.
5. Continuous Monitoring and Improvement: Move HRDD beyond basic training to become a legally enforceable standard. Incorporate technology for effective monitoring and regular improvement to ensure long-term sustainability.

This event marks a significant step toward encouraging responsible business practices in Thailand, especially in relation to human rights due diligence.
